The Family Experiment

Grades 10-Up. In a near-future society facing overpopulation, economic crisis, and declining birth opportunities, many people can no longer afford to have children. A technology company offers an alternative: virtual children created through the metaverse and experienced using VR technology. To promote the service, the company launches a reality television competition called The Substitute, where contestants raise AI-generated children from infancy to adulthood within a condensed nine-month period. As the participants become emotionally attached to their virtual children, hidden secrets, ethical dilemmas, relationship conflicts, and questions about artificial intelligence begin to emerge. The novel explores the consequences of advanced technology on human relationships, parenting, privacy, and society, while combining psychological suspense with speculative science fiction.
